چکیده

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz), although native to Brazil, is still underutilized, especially when it comes to using its aerial part. In order to study the potential of the cassava plant for use as animal feed, the present work evaluated the characteristics of the aerial part of cassava when submitted to the processes of ensiling and haymaking. Treatments consisted of: aerial part of the plant ensiled without wilting (PAS); aerial part ensiled after wilting (PAE), and aerial part made into hay (PAF). Chemical analyses were run in order to evaluate the traits that determine the nutritional value of silage and hay. Wilting increased dry matter concentration from 25% to 27.7%, without changing the concentration of soluble carbohydrates (33.3 and 35.5% in the PAS and PAE, respectively), as well as buffer capacity (204 mmol kg DM in PAS and 195 mmol kg DM in PAE). Neither pH (3.57 in fresh silage and 3.60 in PAE) nor the ADIN concentration (11.32% of total nitrogen in PAS and 9.99% of total nitrogen in PAE) differed between the silages, but ADIN concentration was higher in hay (15.39%). Wilting caused an increase in the concentration of ammonia (from 6.5% of total nitrogen in PAS to 13.0 of total nitrogen in PAE). The levels of volatile fatty acids did not change with wilting. The ensiling process reduced the concentrations of free hydrocyanide (HCN), without, however, affecting cyanohydrin.

Bale Location Effects on Nutritive Value and Fermentation Characteristics of Annual Ryegrass Bale Stored in In-line Wrapping Silage

In southeastern regions of the US, herbage systems are primarily based on grazing or hay feeding with low nutritive value warm-season perennial grasses. Nutritious herbage such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) may be more suitable for preserving as baleage for winter feeding even with more intensive production inputs. Emerging in-line wrapped baleage storage systems featuring rapid ...

Fermentation quality and nutritive value of a total mixed ration silage containing coffee grounds at ten or twenty percent of dry matter.

Six wethers were used in a replicated 3 x 3 Latin square to study the fermentation quality and nutritive value of total mixed ration (TMR) silages that included wet coffee grounds (WCG). The TMR were prepared using a commercial compound feed, timothy hay, alfalfa hay, dried beet pulp, and a vitamin-mineral supplement in a ratio of 36.5:30:20:12:1.5, respectively, on a DM basis, with timothy hay...

Spring Yield and Silage Characteristics of Kura Clover, Winter Wheat, and in Mixtures

Kura clover (Trifolium ambiguumM. Bieb.) grown in monoculture is difficult to harvest mechanically because of its decumbent growth habit, and legumes in general have poor ensiling characteristics. Our objectives were to assess forage yield, nutritive value, and silage characteristics of kura clover–winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) mixtures to determine usefulness as a silage crop. ‘Cardinal’...

Silage Fermentation End Products and Microbial Populations: Their Relationships to Silage Quality and Animal Productivity

Understanding the roles that various microbes play in silage fermentation and the factors that affect their growth can help us understand why silages ferment in various ways. In many, but not all cases, the fermentation that a crop undergoes can be explained by how microbes interact with factors such as moisture content, buffering capacity, and sugar content. However, management factors such as...

Use of the in vitro gas production technique to study feed digestibility in domesticated ostriches (Struthio camelus var. domesticus)

In order to enhance knowledge of the nutritive value of ostrich feeds, the in vitro gas production technique was used. Five feeds (corn silage, CS; alfalfa hay, AH; barley, BG; soybean meal, SM; beet pulp, BP) were weighed (~ 1g) in quadruplicate in 120 ml serum flasks and incubated at 39 °C with 75 ml of anaerobic medium and 4 ml of reducing solution. A pool of caecal contents obtained at slau...
